Fiddling for the Wolves

In 1974, I moved to  Brattleboro, Vermont and shortly afterward I met Paul and Ike Robinson. Paul was in his late seventies and played the fiddle. I started visiting and recording him. One day he  told me a story about a fiddler trapped in a bear pit with a bear and how this fiddler had kept the bear at bay by playing the fiddle. At the time, I found the story entertaining but had no idea it was a widespread folk motif involving fiddlers and wild animals. Since then, I have found many variants from different parts of the world and have been collecting them whenever I come across them.

Solo for the Snakes (1902)
